Anna I think your questions are in depth and when answered will be very informative of your topic. You cover all components of excessive gaming including gaming with children, students, and the workplace. I think the age range is helpful in fully understanding the effects of excessive gaming. I think your research is well connected to your topic. you could maybe specify on a certain aspect on excessive gaming, rather than simply asking if it is good or bad. Other than that, I think you are on the right track with your research and you had a great poster.
I think you have a good topic and have a good idea of where you are going especially with the different emotional, social, physical and psychological effects of a gaming addiction. I would be sure to make sure to research the pervasiveness of any addiction in every aspect of the addicts life and compare that to the effects of a gaming addiction on the gamers life. Also, maybe touch on how often times addicted gamers in many ways try to live vicariously through their virtual creations and often experience highs and lows in real life when they encounter highs and lows in the virtual world. Overall I can definitely see where you are going with this and believe you have a well defined topic that will be researchable.
The questions your are posing for your research have great depth to them. It is interesting how gaming could become an addiction. The focus of your topic seems to be clear. What is excessive? How do we define what is too much? They are good questions that apply to any topic around addictions. You exhibit good relationships between different elements of your argument as well. One element that you could cover relates to my topic. I am doing research on high-definition technology. Is it possible that HD gaming has an effect on the addictive nature of a game?
JR has made it quite obvious that his semester project will be on excessive gaming and the effects that they have on the gamers themselves. He makes it clear that we must first define what is excessive gaming and then when it becomes an addictions. He explains that he wants to go into the impacts that 'addictive' gaming might have. He indicates that there are social, health, psychological, and other remifications that can occur from a kid just sitting in his room and gaming 24/7. He plans to cover different types of games from fantasy worlds to simulations. He says when explaining the poster that one of his sources was a scholarly article that pertained specifically to his topic. He was very clear that he will cover a range of ages to study. I can see JR's vision.
The topic of your term project is represented on your poster in an effective fashion. Your questions as to what the mental, physical, social, etc. effects of excessive gaming are getting at the heart of your topic area and giving you a great platform to use as a launching point for the continuation of research. You may have wanted to feature some hard data in the form of statistics on your initial poster to get the minds of viewers around the real problem of excessive gaming. No parts of the poster seem out of place or disconnected as you do a great job of sticking to the focus of the topic. You mentioned the social ramifications of excessive gaming manifested in situations such as the Columbine shootings, but you may have wanted to show examples of destruction excessive gaming has caused. Also, resources are not utilized in this presentation of the early stage of the ISP, but there should be a wealth of academic studies done on the issue to utilize for research. You have a good start to your research - I look forward to seeing the end result!
Maurice's project will focus on the excessive gaming and how it can often be considered an addiction. Maurice should look into what defines an addiction and how the various aspects of excessive gaming can fall under that category. Maurice will look at different types of games and how they have an affect on people's lives. Excessive gaming can cause negative side effects at work, with loss of production and focus. Also, excessive gamers lose touch with the family and friends. Maurice should look at how excessive gaming affects relationships. With many of the multiple user online role playing games like second life, people create avatars and be essentially whoever they want in these virtual worlds. Even though you are still meeting people in these virtual worlds, you are hiding behind a computer screen. How real can these relationships be? I think Maurice has a good start and his research questions seems focused.
I think you're heading on the right track with your project. When we talked, it seemed as if you'd been exploring different questions concerning the psychological and physical effects of excessive gaming. You mentioned that doing too much of anything could lead to an addiction. While I believe this is true, I also feel that you should research what an actual addiction is and site it in your project. Also finding data on what qualifies as excessive gaming would be really helpful. Here are some questions that I think could be really helpful to you when answered: 1.What qualifies as excessive gaming? Has a # of hours been set? 2. What are some of the psychological effects caused by the addiction? 3. If a gamer games multiple hours a day but this doesn't adversely affect his or her life, is this still considered excessive gaming?
JR's project I think this topic brings up many questions. How these addictive games are changing our generation? How addicting games can result in gambling and the affects of excessive interest in a virtual world rather than the real world. I think you topic over all is a good idea, you are going in the right direction.
